Barbie with Type 1 Diabetes? Mike and Jack Weigh In (With Belly Laughs, CGMs & Real Talk)
In the latest episode of We Are T1D, titled “T1D Barbie & Breaking Boundaries with Mike & Jack”, the lads explore one of the biggest moments in Type 1 diabetes pop culture — the launch of T1D Barbie. With laughs, insight, and some sensor-related chaos, Mike and Jack take a close look at how this doll is making waves in the diabetes community.
This isn’t just a toy — T1D Barbie is a symbol of visibility, empowerment, and progress. And of course, Jack’s already asking: “Where’s the Action Man with a CGM?”
Barbie with a CGM, Pump & Purpose
The new Barbie Fashionistas Doll With Type 1 Diabetes (aka T1D Barbie) features a visible CGM sensor, insulin pump, and even a tiny phone to monitor her blood sugars. She was created in collaboration with Breakthrough T1D to promote representation for young people living with diabetes.
“I’ve seen kids holding that T1D Barbie and smiling like they’ve just met themselves,” Mike says. “That’s what it’s about — representation that actually matters.”
T1D Barbie was developed with input from families affected by diabetes, medical advisors, and inclusive product designers. Her launch is part of Mattel’s Fashionistas line, which celebrates diversity in ability, appearance, and life experience. With her pink outfit and polka-dot design, T1D Barbie is now helping young girls feel proud of who they are — diabetes and all.
“I Want an Action Man with a Sensor!”
While the T1D Barbie has been widely celebrated, Mike and Jack couldn’t help but wonder — where’s the male representation?
“I want an Action Man with a sensor,” Jack says. “One with a hypo kit and the ability to carb count on the battlefield.”
Mike jokes, “I just can’t wait for videos of kids shouting ‘T1D Barbie’s hypo!’ and squirting apple juice in her face.”
The jokes are hilarious, but the message is clear: this step ahead is powerful, but boys with diabetes need representation too. T1D Barbie is an incredible start — but inclusive toys should show every child living with Type 1, not just one demographic.
Mental Health, Comebacks & Blood Sugar Swings
In between all the Barbie chat, Jack opens up about stepping away from Instagram and the podcast for a while. He needed time to protect his mental health — something all too common in the T1D world. “I couldn’t even open my WhatsApp,” he shares. “I just needed to reset.”
During this break, his blood sugars slipped out of range. But Jack’s made a strong comeback. “I’m back at 85% now,” he says proudly. “I feel good.”
This honesty is what makes the podcast relatable. Life with diabetes isn’t just about tech and control — it’s about managing emotions, burnout, and bouncing back. And even when things aren’t perfect, T1D Barbie is proof that being different doesn’t mean being alone.
Fitness, FITT1D & The Morning Abs Challenge
Mike’s on a mission to get the T1D community moving — and it starts with FITT1D, his new fitness brand. He shares how his 28-day core challenge is already improving his insulin sensitivity and confidence.
“Day four and my abs are popping,” Mike laughs. “It’s not about a six-pack — it’s about sitting down without slumping!”
He explains how daily movement makes his blood sugars easier to manage. Gym wear is launching soon. FITT1D aims to be the first active wear line made for and by people with Type 1. Mike’s message is simple: “When you move, you feel better. And when you feel better, you manage diabetes better.”
Even T1D Barbie would probably agree — diabetes and movement go hand in hand.
