Type 1 Diabetes Comeback
Type 1 Diabetes Comeback

2 Wins, 2 Breakdowns & a Massive Type 1 Diabetes Comeback (Our Most Honest Episode Yet)

Quick Summary

Sometimes Type 1 Diabetes hits you hard — physically, mentally, emotionally — and you feel like you’re hanging on with a juice box and a tiny bit of hope. But the Type 1 Diabetes comeback is where the magic happens. It’s where you find your strength, your community, and weirdly… your sense of humour again. And trust us — we needed all three in this episode.

Welcome back to the We Are T1D Podcast, where we share the real-life highs, lows, swearing, stupidity, breakthroughs, breakdowns, and everything in between. No scripts. No fake perfection. Just two lads, Type 1 Diabetes, and a weekly rollercoaster we somehow survive.

In this episode, we talked through two wins, two breakdowns and one big comeback, proving that life with T1D is never just one thing. Some weeks you’re fresh basil, other weeks you’re mouldy bread. But you know what? We keep going.

The Type 1 Diabetes Comeback — Why It Matters

  • Good streak
  • Chaos
  • Denial
  • Rage bolus
  • Crisps
  • More chaos
  • Then… comeback

It’s not linear. It’s not Instagram-flat-graph perfect. It’s messy. But a Type 1 Diabetes comeback reminds you that:

  • A bad week isn’t a bad diabetic
  • One number doesn’t define your worth
  • Time-in-range is information, not judgement
  • You can reset at ANY time

If you needed that reminder, take it. Now breathe.

The Type 1 Diabetes Comeback Mindset

A comeback in T1D isn’t one dramatic movie moment. It’s a tiny choice you make on a completely average Tuesday — when you’re tired, annoyed, overstimulated, and thinking about eating the entire biscuit aisle.

A Type 1 Diabetes comeback happens when you say:

  • “I’m going to try again.”
  • “I’m not broken — I’m just in a bad patch.”
  • “One graph doesn’t define me.”

That’s the spirit of this episode. And it started with two wins…

Win of the Week — Mike vs Freddy Krueger Blood Sugars

Mike took on his long-term horror-villain (night spikes 🌙) and actually won. No rage bolus, no 3am disaster. Just patience, a correction, and a flat Dexcom line that deserves its own trophy.

That’s a comeback. Not dramatic. Not glamorous. But powerful.

Win of the Week — Jack’s Mental Reset

Jack’s win was more personal. After a rough patch mentally — stress, burnout, low mood, snack-ageddon — he finally took a step back and pressed the internal reset button.

And here’s where the story deepens…

Jack also recently discovered he has ADHD — which suddenly explained a lot. If diabetes is already like juggling knives, ADHD turns it into juggling knives while someone shouts your name, throws a balloon at your head and plays drum and bass at 160bpm.

Jack’s brain wasn’t “failing” him — it just works differently. Faster. Noisier. More tabs open. More notifications. Less calm space for carb-counting and planning basal tweaks.

And in true Jack fashion, he didn’t cry about it — he laughed, learned and used the diagnosis as a tool, not a label. Knowledge gave him control, and control helped kick-start his comeback.

The Breakdowns (Because Comebacks Need a Plot Twist)

  1. Mike hit burnout, battling highs, lows, work stress and guilt — the full emotional buffet.
  2. Jack fell into the ADHD + T1D overwhelm, where decision fatigue, snacks, stress and exhaustion all piled up at once.

These weren’t dramatic movie meltdowns. They were the silent diabetic breakdowns everyone has, but no one talks about.

The kind where you function… but not well. You cope… but not kindly. You manage… but not yourself.

And here’s the best part:

Breakdowns aren’t failure. They’re feedback.

Why This Was a True Type 1 Diabetes Comeback

Because both lads chose to:

  • Slow down
  • Reassess
  • Talk about it
  • Change one thing
  • And laugh through the madness

Comebacks don’t arrive with fireworks — they arrive with self-awareness, humour and one good decision at a time.

Final Word

Your Type 1 Diabetes comeback might start today. Or tomorrow. Or next Thursday after a hypo tantrum and a packet of Hobnobs. It doesn’t matter when — it just matters that you keep coming back.

Because we’re not aiming for perfection.

We’re aiming for progress, humour, community…
…and blood sugars that behave at least occasionally.
